THE Principality of Monaco
The capital city of the principality of Monaco, is one of the world’s rare enclaves that has the look and feel of a country without actually being a country. Monaco is home to the second largest port in the Mediterranean Sea and lies on the Exclusive Economic Zone extending from France and Italy. The city state is only 2.2 square miles (6 km2), making it about half the size of Central Park in New York!
Monaco has a population of about 36,000 people (which is about the same as New York City’s Central Park!) but also has many visitors each year. In fact, Monaco has over 15 million visitors annually from all over the world.
This state city is also one of the richest. In fact, it’s so rich that it doesn’t need taxes. The ruling Grimaldi family has been living in Monaco since 1297. They own most of the land in Monaco and make their money from renting out apartments to tourists during the summer months.
Most people come to Monaco for its beautiful beaches, casinos and its famous Formula 1 Grand Prix race track. However, there are many other things to see and do in Monaco — including museums, shopping and restaurants — so here are some tips on how to spend your time there.
