Create your own Athens walking tour that fits your expectations
Most of you might know Athens because of its majestic Acropolis. But there is much more to this city than just that. Before getting to our tips on what to see in Acropolis, let us introduce you to the city itself.
When you visit the Metropol of Greece, you will notice the Greek culture peeking on you from every corner. To explore the city, we recommend you to undertake a tour of Athens. You can make your walking tour for free and see all the main landmarks by following our brief guide.
Syntagma Square
As you arrive in the city, there is a big chance you will find yourself at the Syntagma metro station, which happens to be placed at the heart of Athens, Syntagma Square. This square is the main one in Athens and its name means constitution. All the major events in Greece are celebrated at this square and therefore, you can not miss coming here.
On Syntagma square you can see the Royal Palace, where the Greek Parliament, also known as Voulí Ton Ellínon is situated. You can also pay your respect by 2 minutes of silence in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a war memorial.
Every hour there is a change of Presidential guards, also known as Evzones, in front of this monument.
Right next to the Greek Parliament lays a beautiful National Garden, where you can relax and enjoy 24 hectares filled with various kinds of plants and flowers.
Streets of Athens
Moving on from the main square, it is time for you to experience the true Greece. Wandering down the streets of Athens you will see the street art, smell the local Greek cuisine, and listen to the crowd of Greeks.
One kilometer from Syntagma you will find yourself in the old town of Athens on the Monastiraki square. It is one of a kind place to visit with its flea market and several different food delicacies.
Another highly recommended neighborhood to visit, the oldest street, is located right under the Acropolis Hill. The Plaka district. Here you can find the hidden gems of Greek history as it is a place full of neoclassical houses, pedestrian streets, and ruins from the Roman era of the city.
It is also filled with cute little coffee shops and restaurants, so you can take a break and just enjoy yourselves at one of these places.
Museums
Because of the years of history of this city, your “Athens walking tour” can not exclude a visit of museums. For the lovers and admirers of Art, we suggest you visit the Museum of Folk Art. Apart from the alluring exhibition, there is also a lot of events happening, that might interest you. Our other suggestion is the Frissiras Museum of paintings from ancient Athens, which is located in Plaka.
The third museum we want to mention is the Acropolis museum. Here you can find every artifact ever found on the Acropolis hill. It captures the archeological history of the place and it is definitely worth visiting due to its importance to understand the whole Acropolis.
Acropolis
And finally, Acropolis. The main reason for visiting Athens for most of the tourists. For only 20 euros you get to see one of the most popular historical sites in the world with its hidden treasures. At the entrance, you will be offered a guided tour with an English speaking guide. A great way to learn more about certain monuments!
There is a map to guide you through the whole place, and here are some landmarks you can not miss.
The main building, the biggest and most magnificent one, is called Parthenon.
Near it, there is Erechtheion, which you will recognize by 4 statues of women replacing the slopes.
Below Acropolis, there is a world’s first theatre, theatre of Dionysos, where a long time ago, people went to see plays of historical figures such as Sophocles or Euripides.
Apart from that, you will get to see the Kerameikos, which is known for being an area full of pottery shops.
There is also the Tower of the Winds, a clocktower, considered to be the world’s first meteorological station.
We can’t forget the Temple of Olympian Zeus, which was built for people to honor the biggest of gods.
Of course, there are many more breathtaking monuments with its fascinating stories, which you will be able to see in Acropolis.
Food and restaurants
Since there is an uncountable number of options where to eat in Athens, you should not think twice about making your trip into a small food tour. You can try the famous Moussaka, have a traditional Gyros, or go for some sides, like taramasalata or olives in olive oil. Here are some of the best picks for you, where to eat.
If you are curious to try out the traditional Greek kitchen, we recommend a restaurant called Klimataria. It is a restaurant where people enjoy music, dance, and good food all at once.
If you are more inclined towards seafood and would like to enjoy the food with a view on the harbor and sailboats, Varoulko is the right place for you.
Talking about views, there are two recommended restaurants with the best views in Athens. Orizontes, with a very scenic view of the city, and Strofi, with a picturesque site of Acropolis.
Our last tip is for those of you with a sweet tooth. Greece’s tastiest Loukoumades (Greek Doughnuts) can be found at the Lukumades dessert café.
Nightlife
Of course, we can’t forget about the nightlife. Did you know that in Greece, they don’t have a word for a hangover? They do not know or care what it is. We’ve found the hottest nightclubs in Athens, and we assure you, you’re guaranteed entertainment at these places.
First on our list is Island club, where you feel like you escaped the city and find yourself on a Greek island. Then there is Bolivar beach bar, which promises you sand, drinks, and parties with the best DJs. Another bar is called Dybbuk, which is very new in the center of Syntagma.
If you want to go to an old school classic, rock bar, you should go to Rock n Roll Athens. And if you are tired of everything being too “Greek”, you can go to a Japanese bar Rakkan.
We believe, these tips will help you make your tour exceptional. At the moment we are not operating any tours in Athens, but if you are motivated and would like to join our team by starting your own tour, you are more than welcome to visit our “become a guide section”.
