Make your Berlin walking tour fun and educative!
Berlin, the German capital, is by far one of the most interesting cities in Europe. Considering its population, it is comparable to London, and it is just as attractive for tourists.
The city is home to a very troublesome yet inspiring history. From the Cold War, through the holocaust and all the way upuntil now. But thanks to this, the city carries so many meaningful stories. So its more than understandable why it would be on your list of “must visit” places.
Apart from Berlin’s historic monuments, it is also known for a number of modern landmarks and rich art scene. To experience the whole city of Berlin, from the main sites, the alternative neighbourhoods, attractions and restaurants, you would need more than just a few days. Therefore, we advise you to plan your trip in advance so that you can see what interests you in particular.
In this guide, we will offer some advice on how to create the best tour of Berlin. One that will include everything necessary and we still be on the budget.
Berlin Welcome Card
Before starting our Berlin walking tour guide, we want to make sure you leave the city with the best experience and not regretting that you spent all your money. To make your trip affordable, we recommend you go online and purchase the Berlin Welcome Card.
With this card, you do not have to worry about train tickets and expensive entrance fees.
It gives you unlimited travel using public transport in the centre (AB zones) or centre and one more zone (ABC zones, which includes Schoenefeld airport). It is up to you for how long you want to buy this card. However, the minimum is two days and it costs 20 – 23 euro for adults.
Apart from free travelling, you can use this card to get discounts up to 50% on entrances to most of the top sites and attractions in Berlin. Together with the card you will get a practical map of the city and loads of tips and advice on other ways to save money on your trip.
City tour
Berlin is a big city. Hence why you should be prepared for some walking if you want to see it all. A city tour of Berlin usually takes the whole day, but we assure you it is worth it. Compared to many walking tour companies, we believe the best way to plan your itinerary is by preparing your own private tour, where you can decide yourself where you want to go and when do you want to take a coffee break. This is a great option for those who would rather enjoy their day tripthan follow tour guides.
Starting our list of recommended places to see in Berlin is the Reichstag Building. It is a German parliament building located in the northern part of Ebertstrasse and is a popular tourist site.
Then there is the Memorial of the Berlin Wall, which lays in the city centre. It is an open-air exhibition, consisting of former foundations of the wall. As a symbol of the division of Germany and of all the victims struck by it, it has been kept in a good condition for tourists to visit.
There are also some pieces of the wall remaining and recreated by amazing street art designers. Near the city centre lays an open-air gallery of this artcalled the East Side Gallery. This gallery has officially been claimed to be a heritage-protected landmark.
Mentioning the German division, the most famous landmark symbolic for this event must be the Brandenburg Gate. It is situated in the west of Unter den Linden venue and it is the last remaining city gate in Berlin. Just as it reminds us of the division, it is also a sign of reunification.
Staying in the topic, we have another remarkable monument in Berlin, which is the Holocaust Memorial or the Memorial of the Murdered Jews of Europe. It was built to honour the Jewish victims of the Holocaust and it is a huge, sad and a breathtaking place.
If you are interested in the past and would like to see where was Hitler hiding during world war two, you can go get a site of Hitler’s bunker near the Brandenburg Gate.
Since Berlin is also known for its modern side, one place that represents the modern architecture is the Berliner Philharmonie. It is a house of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and even if you are not interested in seeing a show, you should at least go and take a look at the place.
Last thing on our list for your city tour, but definitely not the last place to visit in Berlin, is the UNICEF world heritage site the Museum Island. Its name speaks for itself, it is the northern part of a Spree river island, with five interesting museums devoted to art and archaeology.
The museums are Bode Museum, Pergamon Museum, New Museum, Old Museum and Old National Gallery. Apart from museums, you can also admire the beautiful Berlin Cathedral.
The last museum we want to mention is one connected to the history of Berlin, Sachsenhausen. It is a concentration camp memorial, where you can see the terrible conditions people were held captive in.
Squares and streets
We are sure that sightseeing tours are very interesting and educative, and they should be included in every visit to a new city. But if you want to discover Berlin as it is now, the culture, the people, the food, you should also get ready for an alternative Berlin walking tour.
To make some original Berlin walks, our suggestion is to visit some of the main shopping streets, and culture-rich squares, bars and restaurants. It is the best way to experience the typical German activities such as beer tasting, watching football and eating sausages with bread.
First, you should take a look at the two most popular streets. First one is Unter den Linden, which is known for its magnificent buildings and was already mentioned before, because that is where the Brandenburger Gate is located. And the second street is Kurfusrtendamm or Ku’Damm street, which is the most distinguished avenue and very suitable for shopping.
When wandering down the streets you will always end up on a square. Some of the most famous squares are the Alexanderplatz, which is considered to be the heart of Berlin. Then there is Potsdamerplatz, which is known for being the noisiest square. And also, Gendarmenmarkt is a beautiful square with both German and French churches.
Bars and Restaurants
For all our food lovers, you can find a variety of restaurants on the Alexanderplatz. But if you want to try out German cuisine, you should head to Nikolaiviertel. They serve typical German sausages, veal steaks, cheesecakes and potato salads.
Another local favourite is Simon Dache street, where you will find many affordable restaurants. If you don’t feel like trying out new things and would prefer some international meals, check out the Jewish quarter.
In regards to nightlife, you once again have tons of options. If you just want to hang out with your friends and have a drink, we recommended the Das Hotel Bar. If you want to enjoy your drinks while overlooking the city, you can go to the Klunkerkranich rooftop bar.
For those who feel like they want to be outside in nature, you can go to Prater Garten. And if you are looking for something more exotic, than the Dschungel Bar is right up your alley. Other great tips include the Silver Future, Barbie Deinhoff’s or the Kantine am Berghain.
Now, if you are seeking more than just places to drinks, these are the best ranked night clubs in Berlin. Places to go if you want to enjoy your night with an awesome and unforgettable party:
Berghain claimed to be one of the best clubs in the world. House of Weekend, with the view of Berlin’s cityscape. Watergate, with spectacular water floor and an outside deck. Tresor, known for its hard and loud techno music. Golden Gate, which is placed beneath the railway.
Unfortunately, we are currently not operating any guided walking tours in Berlin. But if you feel like you have something to offer and are interested in being a tour guide, please feel free to take a look at our “become a guide section”.
