Copenhagen, as the capital city of the happiest nation in the world, is getting more and more attention every year. It might be due to the city’s rich history, outstanding architecture and famous Danish royal family, or because of the colorful street Nyhavn, happy people and the welcoming nature of the city. In any case, we are here to offer some tips on how to make your stay in this beautiful cityan unforgettable experience.

Historical city center

We startwith the necessary and that is the introduction of the historically rich city center. As the major city of Denmark, Copenhagen has a lot to offer in terms of magnificent landmarks.

To experience all the “must-see” attractions, our tip number one is to take part in one of the free walking tours. You can find them online and it is a great way to get experienced tour guides that will lead you through the city and tell you exciting stories that lay behind each and every landmark. Our suggestion is to create your own  “Grand tour”.

You can get inspiration from some of the most tip based guided walking toursthat tourists in Copenhagen pick, but after all, it is up to you, which famous monuments do you decide to visit. During this tour you can go to see the city hall square with its majestic dragon fountain, the old city center with option to shop for some souvenirs, Christiansborg Palace, Copenhagen’s Cathedral, the Round Tower and much more of the city.

Colours, palaces and fairy tales

Apart from city walks, your tour should include visiting the most famous and eye-catching harbor street in Copenhagen, Nyhavn. While absorbing the atmosphere there you should not pass on the opportunity to take a picture on one of the love bridges with a unique background of the canal with parked sail ships and Nyhavn colorful old houses.

Most of the guided tours end with the visit of Nyhavn, but our tip number two is to adjust your own private tour and continue your walk towards the north. This direction you will discover the home of the Danish royal family, the Amalienborg Palace. You might be lucky and get a glimpse of the queen because when the Danish flag is raised, the queen herself is present in the palace.

Continuing north, not far from the palace, you will get to the most iconic statue of the city of Copenhagen. You might not know, but Copenhagen is often referred to as a land of fairy tales. The reason for this is the fact, that the world’s most famous fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen lived in this city for a long period of his life, and this is where he wrote some of his first masterpieces.

You can find a statue of this gentleman sitting on a chair holding a book in the King’s garden in Copenhagen. But the one statue that you have to visit as a part of your Copenhagen walking tour is the one of The Little Mermaid. The little mermaid is the most symbolic statue in the whole city and it is proven everyday by the number of tourists gathered around her at all times.

Explore local food places

After all the sightseeing, all true travelers are also interested in the local cuisine of the place they visit. During summer in Copenhagen there are a few places worth a food tour to participate in various food tastings at different restaurants. Our tip, tip number 3, is going to a street food market Reffen. If you want to get the best street food experience and be able to try out different dishes, you should definitely go there.

It is a place where local guides won’t take you because it is a little bit further from the city center, but at Reffen you can get a gourmet experience like no other.

And, as something extra, every evening after 9 pm there is also a DJ and an outside party for those who like to enjoy the night just as much as they enjoy the day.

Fun and entertainment

In Copenhagen you can always find tons of interesting events and attractions. One of the most fun, family attractions is the second-oldest amusement park in the world Tivoli Gardens. You do not want to miss out on this one. Our tip number 4, is to visit this place during Halloween or Christmas because it is during these seasons when the garden changes into a magical place with very on point decorations and fireworks every Saturday and Sunday.

Since Tivoli is in the very center of Copenhagen, and it is the most known amusement park, it happens to be a little bit pricey. But don’t worry, there is a cheaper alternative, the oldest amusement park in the world Bakken, that is located 10 minutes out of Copenhagen and offers very similar qualities for a much lower price. The entrance for example is completely free.

Christiania

Finally, our tip number 5. Do not forget to visit Christianshavn. Everybody, who wants to explore Copenhagen and its variability should at one point go to this place. It is a more hip part of the city, with a lot of coffee places that embrace the hip culture. In Christianshavn you can find a free town called Christiania, where it is forbidden to take pictures, and you should go there to find out why.

Hopefully these tips will help you with managing your trip. We are currently not operating any tours in this city, however, if you’d like to join our team and start your own tour in Copenhagen please visit our “become a guide section”.
