Walking Tour Bern with all the “must-see” places
Bern Switzerland, built around a U shaped Aare river, is a wonderful place to visit mostly due to its preserved medieval architecture. There are several landmarks one must see when discovering this city and other interesting attractions we want to mention in this article.
City tour
When you find yourself in the city of Bern you have a couple of options of how you can explore the place. You can go for guided walking tourswhere you get a tour guide and you just follow him through the city, you can participate in one of the free walking tours. We suggest you make your own plan and itinerary. You should be in charge of your trip and decide what you want to see.
Thankfully, Bern is a city where you will not spend hours long walks to get from one landmark to another. Most of the places you can fit into your schedule in less than three hours.
So let’s start the tour of Bern. We highly recommend you start in the Altstadt or Old City. It is a picturesque place, where apart from untouched buildings you can find the large Church of the Holy Ghost also called the Heiliggeistkirche.
When you walk down the Spitalgasse street you will arrive at the Baerenplatz square which represents the expansion in the 13th century. Further on the Bundesplatz, there are the magnificent government buildings where a lot of Swiss banks are situated. One of the most famous monuments in Bern is the oldest clock tower, the Zytglogge.
Some of our other tips are visiting the Einstein House Museum and going to the Bern Cathedral. When you undertake the 344 stairs up the tower, you will get a spectacular overview of the Old City, the river, and the mountains of the Bernese Oberland.
Other attractions
Apart from the beautiful city center, there are other places to visit in Bern too. One very symbolic place in Bern, and a popular attraction among tourists is Bern’s Bear Park, also known as Barenpark.
You can go to the bear pit and see some bears for yourself. This animal is very symbolic for the city since it is represented on city flags, buildings and fountains. Even the name Bern comes from the word bear.
Another spectacular park to visit is the Rose Garden. It is a wonderful romantic place, where you can enjoy the beauty of nature and see a picturesque view over the rooftops of buildings of Bern.
If you still feel like you didn’t see enough of the local flora, you can visit the botanical garden with its unique palm house.
For the more adventurous ones, we recommend you hike up the Gurten, which is a high mountain offering a large overview over the city, the lakes and Alps. There is a tower you can climb for free to get an even better experience.
The last tip we have to mention is connected to the rich artistic history. If you are interested in art, you have to visit the Paul Klee Center. It is a museum of art, which exposes some of the world-famous paintings such as Woman with Parasol. You can find a mixture of various styles in here combined with different kinds of media just as Paul Klee used to implement these techniques into his work.
